Kicking off the first in my new Friday Feature series is a short animated film created by Tourist Pictures for the Esquire Network.
Incorrect engine placement aside, slick animations and a fast-paced narrative tell the story of the Porsche 550 Spyder, the first car ever entered by the German automaker into the 450-mile Targa Florio endurance race through the mountains of Sicily. In the early years of the race, the podium was dominated by the Italians, including Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, and Maserati. But in 1956, Porsche entered their first racing car into the competition and bested the Italians and German rival Mercedes-Benz to take the checkered flag.
By the time the series ended in 1973, Porsche had claimed more first-place wins than any other automaker, and the series had given birth to the Targa name.
